Prevent Musculoskeletal Injury
in your Health Care Facility

Musculoskeletal injury can occur in three stages. The first stage usually deals with smaller pains and sensations of fatigue, which typically disappear after a good night's rest or a day off. No real decline of performance is apparent during this phase; however, if the problem areas are not addressed, this can lead to further damage. These symptoms may persist for several weeks or even months at a time, but in most cases a little rest, an aspirin or simple exercise tends to help with these symptoms. When these signs begin to occur, it is important to evaluate your job functions and seek assistance through others and mobility devices (such as ergonomically inclined patient handling equipment).

The second stage usually has more severe pains, especially at night because the body tends to heal during sleep. This level of musculoskeletal injury can lead to a reduction of patient handling, as well as needed time off for healing purposes. Caregivers must inquire about implementing programs to help reduce injury in the workplace and consult their physician about their symptoms. Common treatments include physical therapy or surgery, depending on severity.

The final stage of the musculoskeletal injury obviously is the severely painful. The caregiver's workday is often interrupted with shooting pain while performing their everyday job function and patient handling (pain may progress even when the injured area joint is not in use). As in stage two, the caregiver should contact their physician for treatment. Most common treatment is surgery, however the recovery period should encourage caregivers to protect themselves and not let their body be exposed to injury.

ErgoSafe™ Products works closely with nursing homes and other care giving institutions to provide patient handling devices to assist caregivers with their daily tasks of moving and repositioning patients. Call ErgoSafe™ today and begin employing safer conditions for your employees and patients.
